Lincoln Stars News Release
Lincoln Stars defenseman Jake Beaune has announced his commitment to Robert Morris University, an NCAA Division I program in the Atlantic Hockey Conference (AHC), beginning in the 2021-22 season.
Beaune, 20, has appeared in 46 games, scoring seven times and adding nine assists. Among Stars defensemen, the Livonia, MI native ranks first in goals and second in total points.
In his junior hockey career, Beaune has suited up for 136 games, including a two-year stint in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) with the Aberdeen Wings before joining Lincoln this season.
"It's a huge stress reliever, it's definitely a dream come true," Beaune said. "I'm happy something worked out for me and I'm excited to take the next step at the next level, so it's great."
Robert Morris University's tenure in the NCAA began during the 2004-05 season as a member of College Hockey America (CHA) before moving on to Atlantic Hockey in 2010-11. The Colonials finished third in Atlantic Hockey this season with a conference record of 10-5 and an overall record of 15-9.
"I did some research and Robert Morris sounded like a good fit," Beaune remarked. "Their coaching staff was very interested, so that was a big reason why I chose to go there. I wanted to feel wanted. It's closer to home than where I'm used to being when playing hockey. Right now, I'm 13 hours away and [RMU] is only four hours away from home in a nice area in Pittsburgh."
"If you know Jake Beaune, you're extremely excited for him," Stars General Manager and Head Coach Chris Michael said. "The type of kid he is, what he's done for our culture in the year that he's been here, it's been incredible. To see a 20-year-old, where his game just keeps getting better and better, it's nice to see him finally get rewarded to earn that Division I college scholarship that he's worked his entire life for."
Once Beaune arrives on campus in the fall, he'll be greeted by familiar figures, including Stars goaltender Ryan Ouellette, who will also begin his college hockey career next season with Robert Morris.
"Ryan is a great guy. It's going to be awesome having another four years with him," Beaune said. "My cousin (Brendon Michaelian) plays there too, so it's great for my family and myself. I already know some guys there, so it's perfect."
Beaune has been a backbone for Lincoln in 2020-21, leading all Stars skaters with a plus-7 rating. He's been utilized in a shutdown role on the Stars' top defensive pairing, drawing matchups with the opposition's most dangerous forwards.
"I think my confidence level is boosted up a lot more after playing two years in the NAHL and now here," Beaune continued. "Playing with better guys in the USHL has really helped me develop. I've enjoyed it a lot."
"It just leads you to believe that his best hockey is still ahead of him and that's why we were pushing for so many colleges to take an honest look at him," Michael said. "He's well worth it. Robert Morris got a steal, in my opinion, at least."
