Steel Win Anderson Cup for Second Consecutive Season

April 17, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN - For the second consecutive season and the second time in franchise history, the Chicago Steel have captured the Anderson Cup, awarded to the United States Hockey League regular season champion.

With a 3-2 Steel win in overtime against the Green Bay Gamblers Saturday night combined with a loss by the Muskegon Lumberjacks, the Steel improved their record to 36-11-3-2 (77 pts.), once again sealing the top record in the league.

Chicago becomes the first team to win back-to-back Anderson Cup Championships since Green Bay did it in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. Securing the regular season title gives the Steel home ice advantage through the entirety of the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs.

The 2020-2021 Steel have scored 254 total goals this year, the most in any season in franchise history. The club is on pace to be the second-highest scoring team in USHL history with 4.88 goals per game, trailing only the 2019-2020 Chicago Steel who lit the lamp at an average of 4.94 goals per game.

Chicago currently boasts the top four scorers in the USHL, including the league's leading goal scorer, Matt Coronato, and assist leader, Sean Farrell, who recently set the USHL single-season record for assists.

Last season, the Steel were awarded the Anderson Cup following the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-2020 regular season.

At the time, Chicago owned a 41-7-1-0 (83 pts.) record, were the only team to have clinched a berth in the 2020 Clark Cup Playoffs and had clinched a first-round bye. Both the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Waterloo Black Hawks were the next closest teams to the Steel in the league standings with 68 points, trailing Chicago by 15 points.

This season, the top four teams from both the Eastern and Western Conference will compete for the Clark Cup with three rounds of postseason series to determine the champion.

The Conference Semifinals will be a best-of-three series with all three contests played at the venue of the higher (better) seed from Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 2. The Steel could secure home ice advantage for this round by finishing first or second in the Eastern Conference.

The Conference Finals will be a best-of-three series with either a 1-1-1 or 1-2 format, as chosen by the higher seed, played from Thursday, May 6 through Monday, May 10.

The Clark Cup Final is scheduled to be a best-of-five series with a 2-2-1 format contested from Friday, May 14 through Tuesday, May 25, if necessary.

Playoff tickets for the Eastern Conference Semifinal series (opponent to be determined) will go on sale on Wednesday, April 21 at 10 am by phone at 855-51-STEEL and online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
