Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp led 3-0 after the first inning and 4-0 after the third on Saturday, but the Memphis Redbirds stormed back with a pair of home runs to salvage the series finale with a 6-5 victory in front of 7,318 at 121 Financial Ballpark.
The Jumbo Shrimp (73-52, 4-1) suffered just their 17th one-run loss in 44 such contests, and went just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position against the Redbirds (58-67, 1-4).
With Jacksonville ahead in 4-2 in the seventh inning, Rayder Ascanio doubled with two outs, and then Parker Bugg (loss, 6-2) walked back-to-back batters to load the bases for Kremer Robertson, who connected on a grand slam to give Memphis its first lead of the contest at 6-4. It was the third grand slam that Memphis has hit in 11 games against Jacksonville in head-to-head play.
The Jumbo Shrimp threatened in the eighth. Dustin Fowler and Monte Harrison notched back-to-back singles, and Joe Dunand plated a run with a sacrifice fly. However, the Redbirds picked up two strikeouts to keep the 6-5 advantage. Austin Warner (save, 2) picked up the last four outs in order to earn the save.
Jacksonville got to Memphis starter Jordan Hicks in the first inning, chasing him from his MLB rehab assignment without recording an out. Brian Miller singled to left, and Bryson Brigman and Lorenzo Quintana each walked to load the bases. Miller scored on a groundout from Fowler, and Brigman raced home shortly thereafter on a wild pitch. Harrison then lifted a sac fly to score Quintana and make it 3-0.
Braxton Garrett was sharp on the mound, facing the minimum through his first four innings of work. His lone mistake resulted in a Conner Capel two-run home run, which scored Ali Sanchez, who had reached on a one-out single. Garrett finished by giving up just two runs on three hits in five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. It was his sixth consecutive start giving up two earned runs or fewer.
Jacksonville plated an unearned run in the third inning when Sanchez tried to pick off Harrison at first base and threw the ball, allowing Fowler to score from second.
The season concludes with a five-game road trip to Gwinnett, beginning with a matinee on Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. from Coolray Field.
Coverage begins at 10:50 a.m. on ESPN 690, and online at www.espn690.com, MiLB.tv, and also on the MiLB First Pitch app.
