Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Before he left Uptown Charlotte for a promotion to the Chicago White Sox, infielder Romy Gonzalez was one of the hottest hitters on the Charlotte Knights. In two games since returning, he's picked up right where he's left off.
Gonzalez scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning en route to a walk-off, 6-5 win over the Norfolk Tides from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Saturday night. The win helped even up Charlotte's record to 2-2 during "The Final Stretch" this season.
Appearing in just his second game with Charlotte since being optioned from the White Sox, Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored on Saturday - a night after recording two hits in his first game back on Friday. He's hitting .625 (5-for-8) in those two games back and .400 (16-for-40) with the Knights this season in 11 games.
In the ninth inning, Gonzalez led things off with a single. After Mikie Mahtook went down on strikes for the first out of the inning, Gonzalez was on the move. He stole second base and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Now, with the winning run at third, second baseman Marco Hernández popped out into foul territory and Gonzalez raced home to score the winning run. Norfolk third baseman Tyler Nevin caught the ball and tried to throw Gonzalez out at home, but he made it home successfully to win the game.
The Norfolk Tides scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5. All three runs in the inning were charged to LHP Jace Fry, who was replaced by LHP Bennett Sousa (4-2, 3.97) in the ninth. Sousa got the final two outs in the inning to earn the win.
Right fielder Blake Rutherford launched his 11th home run of the season in the sixth inning. Second baseman Marco Hernández also had a solid day at the plate. Hernandez, who replaced Jake Burger, went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
The two teams will conclude the five-game series with first pitch on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. from Truist Field. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and Charlotte Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. The game will also air live on My 12 WMYT starting at 4:30 p.m.
