Jacksonville Wins Fifth Straight against Memphis

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With a fantastic effort from their pitching staff, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp took a 2-1 pitchers' duel win over the Memphis Redbirds Saturday night in front of 6,940 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Jacksonville (59-45) plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth against Memphis (54-49) Zack Thompson (L, 2-3). With two outs, Jesús Sánchez walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jordan Groshans stroked a single and Sánchez motored home to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 1-0 advantage.

Two innings later, Jacksonville added a key insurance run. Sánchez worked a two-out walk and Groshans reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a double steal and Sánchez scored from third on a wild pitch from Redbirds pitcher Kodi Whitley, putting the Jumbo Shrimp up 2-0.

The Redbirds finally broke through on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. With two outs, Evan Mendoza worked a walk and moved up to second on a single from Alec Burleson. Ivan Herrera was the third consecutive man to reach base, singling home Mendoza to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp leaned heavily on their pitching staff and got a great effort. Nick Neidert (W, 4-0) spun 6.0 scoreless frames, striking out four against one walk and three hits. Will Stewart allowed just one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. George Soriano (S, 6) locked up the game with 1.1 scoreless innings and just two hits allowed.

Jacksonville and Memphis wrap up their series at 6:35 p.m. on Sunday night. RHP Jeff Lindgren (2-1, 6.65 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp and the Redbirds will hand the ball to LHP Matthew Liberatore (4-4, 5.05 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.
