Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights walked-off with two thrilling come-from-behind wins on Friday night to sweep the Gwinnett Stripers in the team's first Truist Field doubleheader of the season. The Knights walked-off with a 5-4 win in game one and walked-off with a 4-3 win in game two. Charlotte leads the series three games to one.
In game one, it was Blake Rutherford who played the hero at the end. Rutherford singled home Adam Haseley in the seventh to lead the Knights to the first of two walk-off wins on Friday night. In game two, Zach Remillard played the hero as he singled home Jake Burger in the seventh to lead the Knights to the second walk-off win of the day.
Down by a score of 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, the Knights put forth an impressive comeback against the Gwinnett bullpen. The Knights rallied to score five runs in the seventh inning for the win. Laz Rivera and Xavier Fernández started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Two batters later, Mark Payton doubled home Rivera for Charlotte's first run of the game. Down by a score of 4-1 with just one out in the seventh, Lenyn Sosa came to the plate and delivered a three-run, game-tying home run.
With game one now tied at 4-4, Haseley doubled to put the winning run on second base with just one out. Rutherford then singled home Haseley for the walk-off victory. LHP Zach Muckenhirn (3-1, 2.84) earned the win out of the bullpen in game one.
Chicago White Sox RHP Vince Velasquez made his second rehab appearance of the homestand in game one of the doubleheader. Velasquez pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed just one walk and fanned two batters.
In game two, the Knights trailed the Stripers 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Remillard played a key role in the sixth inning. The Charlotte first baseman walked and swiped second base to put the tying run in scoring position in the sixth. Catcher Nick Ciuffo then doubled home Remillard to tie the game at 3-3.
One inning later, the Knights loaded the bases with just one out for Remillard. On a 3-1 pitch from Gwinnett reliever Tyler Ferguson (0-1, 2.57), Remilllard singled home Burger to send the 8,000+ fans at Truist Field home happy. Remillard ended up scoring the tying run in the sixth and driving home the winning run in the seventh.
