
Former Jumbo Shrimp Burdick Debuts for Marlins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp outfielder Peyton Burdick made his MLB debut Friday for the Miami Marlins against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Burdick is the fifth former Jumbo Shrimp to make his MLB debut in the last 13 days, following former Jacksonville teammates in outfielder JJ Bleday (July 23, Miami Marlins), right-handed pitcher Huascar Brazoban (July 24, Miami Marlins), infielder Charles Leblanc (July 30, Miami Marlins) and left-handed pitcher Jake Fishman (July 31, Miami Marlins).
Burdick got the start for Miami in left field. He hit seventh, going 0-for-3 with a walk in the Marlins' 2-1 loss.
A third-round pick by Miami in 2019 out of the Wright State University, Burdick logged time with Jacksonville in both 2021 and 2022. With the Jumbo Shrimp this season, Burdick played in 88 games, batting .229/.344/.430/.774 with 33 extra-base hits, 15 doubles, four triples,14 home runs and 51 RBIs. At the time of his promotion, he was ranked among the International League leaders in triples (T-11th), walks (T-8th) and runs scored (2nd).
Currently rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 10 prospect in the Marlins system, Burdick spent three seasons at Wright State University, playing in 178 career games for the Raiders. In his three-year career, Burdick slashed .349/.465/.585/1.050 with 28 home runs and 168 RBIs. As a freshman at Wright State, he was named to the Horizon League All-Second Team and Freshman team, hitting .289/.409/.443 with four home runs and 31 RBIs. He also tallied 11 multi-hit games in 2016.
In addition to Burdick, Leblanc, Brazoban, Bleday and Fishman, former Jumbo Shrimp infielder Joe Dunand (May 7, Miami Marlins), right-handers Chad Smith (May 29, Colorado Rockies), Jason Alexander (June 1, Milwaukee Brewers), Aneurys Zabala (June 12, Miami Marlins) and Max Meyer (July 16, Miami Marlins) and outfielder Jerar Encarnacion(June 19, Miami Marlins) have also made their major league debuts thus far during the 2022 season.
Fishman is the 950th player to don both a Jacksonville uniform and play in the major leagues, including the 112th former Jumbo Shrimp. The history of Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.
