Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC-- Buoyed by an eight-run seventh inning in the first game of a doubleheader, the Jacksonville Suns swept a pair from the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium, sending Carolina to its fifth straight loss with 10-5 and 6-4 decisions.
Pedro Villarreal pitched five solid innings in the DH-shortened 7-inning game, allowing only three hits, no earned runs and striking out nine.
However, with a 5-2 lead going into the top of the 7th, Mudcats reliever Chris Mobley could not close out the victory. Two walks and a single filled the bases with none out and ignited the Suns' rally. Jacksonville scored four runs off Mobley in only 0.2 IP and knocked him out of the game with the Mudcats trailing 6-5. James Adkins replaced him, giving up four more runs in the top of the 7th on a grand slam by Smolinski.
Neftali Soto continued his offensive surge, going 1 for 3 and knocking in two more runs on the night. In his first Double-A appearance, DiDi Gregorious went 1-4 and scoring one run for the Mudcats. Henry Rodriguez, Yasmani Grandal and Josh Fellhauer all knocked in one run apiece.
For the Suns, Joseph O'Gara lasted 4.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs, with reliever Kris Harvey picking up the win.
In the nightcap, Tim Gustafson got his first start for the Mudcats in almost a month. Gustafson gave up a home run to Alex Romero with one out in the top of the 2nd before running into trouble in the top of the 4th. Gustafson gave up single, double and two walks consecutively leading to a pitching change and a five-run inning for a 6-1 lead.
The Mudcats tied the game 1-1 thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Didi Gregorius, scoring Quintin Berry, then closed the gap to 6-3 with two runs in the sixth and another scoring in the seventh.
The third game of the series is Wednesday night at 7:15 PM ET.
