Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, Miss. - An eight-run third inning carried the BayBears well past the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park in a 14-6 victory to open a five-game series.
Paul Goldschmidt started the scoring for the BayBears (61-40, 23-8) in the top of the first as he obliterated his 30th home run of the season off starter Randall Delgado (5-5). Delgado was on the hook for 10 runs (six earned) over 2.2 innings.
Adam Eaton delivered Ed Easley to the dish in the second as the BayBears gained a three-run cushion. Ryan Wheeler committed his first of three errors in the contest to allow Mississippi (40-61, 15-16) on the board in the bottom of the second. That was the only run the Braves would get off Tyler Skaggs (2-1). Skaggs fanned six while lasting six innings.
In the third, the BayBears punished Delgado for an eight-spot. Marc Krauss singled home Goldschmidt to make it 4-1. Ed Easley drove home a run with a groundout while Eaton knocked in another two runs with a single. Goldschmidt reached on an error by Willie Cabrera to bring two more runners across the dish. Wheeler finished the big inning by lining a two-run double to left-center.
Skaggs was able to settle in from there as he limited the Braves to just four hits. Mississippi drew somewhat closer with five runs over the last three frames against Kyler Newby, Yonata Ortega and Josh Ellis. Mississippi ended up using six pitchers including infielder Jordan Kreke, who worked the ninth.
The BayBears battle the Braves in the second of their five-game set on Wednesday night at 7:05 from Trustmark Park. Right-hander Bryan Henry (5-2) gets the start for the BayBears against fellow righty Paul Clemens (6-5). The BayBears are back home on Sunday night to host the Chattanooga Lookouts at 6:05 from Hank Aaron Stadium.
