BayBears Strike Early, Often to Defeat Braves 14-5

PEARL, MS-The Mobile BayBears jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first three innings to defeat the Braves 14-6 in game one of this five-game series at Trustmark Park.

While Mobile (23-8, 61-40) plated 14 runs on 13 hits and two errors, the M-Braves (15-16, 40-61) managed five runs on eight hits and committed four errors in the game.

Mobile starter Tyler Skaggs (2-1) went six innings, limiting the Braves to just one unearned run on four hits and a walk while fanning six.

In his worst start of the season, Randall Delgado (5-5) went just two and 2/3 innings. He gave up 10 runs, six earned, on six hits, a homer, four walks, and two strikeouts.

Paul Goldschmidt launched his Southern League-leading 30th home run of the season in the top of the first, giving the BayBears a quick 2-0 lead.

An RBI-single by Adam Eaton in the top of the second drove in Ed Easley from second, extending Mobile's lead to 3-0. Easley had singled and advanced to second on a missed catcher error by Willie Cabrera.

Ed Lucas led off the Braves' half of the second with a single to right field. Cory Harrilchak followed with a single, and Braeden Schlehuber reached on an error by the third baseman to score Lucas and make it a 3-1 game.

The BayBears plated eight runs on four hits, four walks, and an error to take an 11-1 lead in the top of the third.

A.J. Pollock led off the fifth with a double and scored on an error by Cabrera who was taken out on the slide at second, attempting to turn a double play.

Mobile added a run in the sixth and seventh frames to extend its lead to 14-1.

The Braves added a run in the seventh when Ed Lucas doubled and scored on Schlehuber double to make it a 14-2 game.

Antoan Richardson walked and moved to third on a Dan Nelson single. Richardson then came in to score on a wild pitch. A ground out by Donell Linares moved Nelson to third. Lucas then reached on an error, allowing Nelson to score and make it a 14-4 game. With runners on second and third, Schlehuber singled to right field, plating Lucas and closing the gap to 14-5.

The M-Braves added one more run in the ninth to make it a 14-6 game.

Right-hander Paul Clemens (6-5, 3.67) toes the rubber in game two of this five-game series at Trustmark Park. He'll counter BayBears' righty Bryan Henry (5-2, 3.63). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
