GARRETT WALK-OFF WINS SERIES OPENER
Stone Garrett's walk-off single in the ninth inning on Saturday spurred a 2-1 victory for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp over the Biloxi Shuckers. Jumbo Shrimp starter Cody Poteet fired seven strong inning, scattering seven hits without walking a batter. His lone mistake came in the second inning, when Weston Wilson launched a solo home run to give the Shuckers a 1-0 advantage. However, in the bottom of the frame, John Silviano crushed a solo shot of his own to even the score. The game remained 1-1 until the ninth inning, when Garrett hit a ball off the wall in left field, resulting in a single to give Jacksonville the 2-1 win.
STEPPING STONE
In 14 games from April 18 through May 6, Jacksonville outfielder Stone Garrett went just 3-for-37 (.081) at the plate. However, in the last five games, the Richmond, Texas native has been on fire at the plate. Garrett is 7-for-18 (.389) during this stretch, driving in an extraordinary seven runs while also stealing a pair of bags. Among the 74 players in the Southern League with at least 90 plate appearances on the season, Garrett owns the circuit's highest line drive rate at 35.1 percent. However, he also has the second-highest swinging-strike rate at 21.0 percent.
START FAST, WORRY ABOUT THE REST LATER
In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 16 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.34 ERA (24 ER in 92.1 IP). Shrimp starters have walked 29 (2.8 BB/9), fanned 63 (6.1 K/9) and yielded 75 hits (7.3 H/9) over this run.
ARMS LIKE DAVY CROCKETT
Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a bright spot defensively all season for the club. Santiago Chavez's 12 men caught stealing places in a tie for the Double-A lead. Additionally, as a team, the Jumbo Shrimp have gunned down 24 potential base stealers, leading the Double-A level and ranking in a tie for third out of 120 teams in MiLB. Jacksonville's 49.0 percent caught stealing rate ranks second in Double-A.
'PEN PALS REDUX
Jacksonville's bullpen has already put together two separate streaks of 20 consecutive scoreless innings this season (20 from April 4-8, 21 from April 11-17), and it appears the club has round another hot streak from its relievers. Over their last 25.0 innings of work, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have surrendered just three runs, all earned, on 18 hits (6.5 H/9) for a 1.08 ERA. During this span, they have combined for 32 strikeouts (11.5 K/9) against nine walks (3.2 BB/9). Heading into play on Sunday, the Jacksonville bullpen's scoreless innings streak rests at 12 frames.
EXCLAMATION POINTS
Jacksonville outfielder Magneuris Sierra has been a staple at the top of the Jumbo Shrimp order all season long. Over his last 32 games, Sierra is slashing a robust .311/.374/.403 with four doubles, two triples, one home run and five RBIs. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native ranks third in the Southern League in hits (37), seventh in batting average (.301) and 10th in on-base percentage (.363). Sierra also possesses the second-highest ground ball rate (60.0 percent) and eighth-lowest swinging-strike rate (7.0 percent) in the circuit.
FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER
Jacksonville's 2-1 victory over Biloxi in Saturday's series opener marked the continuation of a subtle trend of late for the Jumbo Shrimp. Thirteen of the club's last 15 games have been decided by three runs or less. Unfortunately for Jacksonville, they have gone just 5-8 in these tight contests during this stretch. On the season, the Jumbo Shrimp have played 24 affairs decided by no more than three runs. The club is 5-6 in one-run games and 3-1 in contests determined by three runs. However, Jacksonville is stunningly 0-8 in games decided by exactly two runs.
SHRIMP SCOPES
If Jacksonville can play error-free baseball on Sunday against Biloxi, it would mark just the fourth time all season the Jumbo Shrimp have gone back-to-back miscue-free games. Jacksonville has yet to play three games in a row without an error... McKenzie Mills has gone three starts in a row without allowing more than two earned runs. Over that span, he has a 2.65 ERA (5 ER in 17.0 IP, 13 H, 7 BB, 10 K).
