Jacksonville Falls 10-6 in Finale with Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Despite taking an early lead, a seven-run seventh inning put the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp too far behind in their 10-6 loss to the Gwinnett Stripers Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field.

Trailing 4-3, Gwinnett (48-51) batted around in the seventh inning, taking the late lead against Jacksonville (54-45) starter Matthew Kent (L, 5-8). Pat Valaika reached on an error to start the inning and Ryan Casteel walked. Joe Dunand blooped an RBI single to tie the game at four. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance to second and third. Ryan Goins walked to load the bases and Delino DeShields Jr. smacked an RBI single to put the Stripers ahead 5-4. In the following at-bat, Preston Tucker was hit by a pitch making it a 6-4 lead. With the bases still loaded, Taylor Motter worked a walk pushing the lead to 7-4. In the following at-bat, Chadwick Tromp reached on an error, increasing the lead to 9-4. With one out, Pat Valaika reached on a fielder's choice as Gwinnett plated their final run of the inning, taking an 10-4 lead.

Jacksonville pushed one run across in the seventh. Bubba Hollins and Norel González knocked back-to-back singles to start off the inning. Bryson Brigman tallied the third consecutive base hit of the inning to score Hollins to make it a five-run deficit.

The Jumbo Shrimp plated their final run in the top of the ninth. González began the inning with his third base hit of the day. Two batters later, Erik González doubled putting runners on second and third. Peyton Burdick flew out but González scored from third cutting the deficit to 10-6.

Jacksonville came out swinging early in the top of the first. On the second pitch of the game, González (2) blasted a solo home run to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 1-0 advantage. Burdick followed with a double and two batters later, Ryan Lavarnway drove him in with a single to push the lead to 2-0.

Gwinnett answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Alex Dickerson led off with a double and scored on a single from Casteel to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp stayed hot in the top of the third. González doubled and with one out, Lavarnway (9) blasted a two-run home run to give Jacksonville a three-run cushion, 4-1.

The Stripers stayed in reach of Jacksonville. In the bottom of the third inning, Tucker (9) walloped a solo home run making it a two-run game, 4-2.

Gwinnett continued their climb back in the bottom of the fourth. Dickerson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out from Valaika. Following a fly out from Casteel, Dunand blooped a single which allowed Dickerson to score.
