LAST TIME OUT
ROCHESTER, NY (July 30, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (50-48) won their fifth straight with a 7-4 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday night. SWB had three hits in the game, all of which were home runs including a grand slam from Josh Breaux.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasted no time thanks to an Estevan Florial leadoff solo homer against Nationals' rehabber Will Harris. It was the third time this season that Florial had hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, all of which have come in the month of July.
The RailRiders blew the game open thanks to a big third inning. After a fielder's choice made it a 2-0 game, Breaux launched a grand slam to left field, giving the RailRiders a 6-0 advantage. It was the first grand slam of the season for the team, the first since Oswaldo Cabrera hit one in the final game of 2021 on October 3. That slam also occurred at Frontier Field. Cabrera would add another to the tally with a solo homer to left field in the fifth to make it 7-0. Cabrera entered the game slugging .622 in the month of July at the Triple-A level. The solo shot was his fifth homer with SWB since returning from a shoulder injury on July 12.
Jhony Brito backed the solid offensive performance with a Triple-A career-high six strikeouts across five-plus innings pitched. The only run charged to him came across after Brito exited the game. He surrendered just three hits. Zach Greene was solid out of the bullpen for SWB, going two innings without being charged with a run while striking out two. Richard Rodríguez made his RailRiders debut, surrendering three runs in the ninth.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders make their last trip to Frontier Field this season with a six-game set in Rochester. The last time the RailRiders were here they dropped five of six in the early part of May. The Red Wings will not return to PNC Field this season.
REMEMBER THE DAY - The RailRiders were swept in a doubleheader in Syracuse back on June 8 to fall to 19-36 on the season. Seventeen games under .500 was a season-worst, while the team found themselves in last, 15.5 games back of first place with a -70 run differential. Since then, the team has gone 31-12 while outscoring their opponents with a +79 run differential. They enter play on Sunday four games back of first.
POLAR OPPOSITES - Entering Sunday, the Red Wings have lost a season-most ten straight games. The RailRiders enter tonight with a five-game winning streak. In the month of July, Rochester has gone 7-16. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has gone 17-6.
FLOING, FLOING, GONE - Estevan Florial led off Saturday's game with a solo home run three pitches into the contest. It was the third time this season he had done that, all three of which coming in the month of July (7/2 and 7/4).
SLAMTON/WILKES-BARRE - Josh Breaux keyed the offense with a grand slam on Saturday night as a part of a five-run third inning. It was the first grand slam the RailRiders had hit this season, with the last also occurring here at Frontier Field courtesy of Oswaldo Cabrera on October 3, 2021.
KEEPING UP WITH THE OSWALD(O)S - Oswald Peraza is slashing .307/.381/.547 in July while Oswaldo Cabrera is slashing .292/.393/.667. Andújar hadn't driven in four or more runs in a game since his breakout 2018 campaign with the Yankees, something he did three times against the Blue Jays and Orioles.
RON'S GONE RIGHT - Since July 8, Ronald Guzmán has been on a 15-for-36 push (.417) with six doubles and a home run. This stretch has lasted nine games. The seven games prior to this, Guzmán had gone 3-for-19 (.158) while striking out seven times.
