Atlanta Gladiators News Release
After falling behind 3-0 midway through the first period, the Gwinnett Gladiators used Jim Jackson's goal 40 seconds into overtime to cap a 5-4 comeback win over the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Mississippi jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway though the first period. Louis Dumont opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first period, tapping home a lose puck in the slot past Gladiators netminder T.J. Aceti to give the Sea Wolves a 1-0 lead. Nicholas Corbeil and Anthony Battaglia added the assists on the goal.
Battaglia netted the Sea Wolves second goal 7:39 into the period as the forward slipped past the Gladiators defense and walked in untouched on Aceti for the goal. Travis Lisabeth and Pat O'Leary added the assists on the Mississippi tally.
Another Gladiators defensive breakdown set up Mississippi's third goal as Lisabeth buried the turnover past Aceti giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead. Jeff Hutchins added an assist on the give-and-go play with Lisabeth.
Gwinnett got on the board 19 seconds into a power play. Jim Jackson found a loose puck along the goal line and flipped the puck past Mississippi netminder Matt Underhill for his first tally of the season. Kris Goodjohn and Chris Durno picked up the assists on the goal.
Mike Vigilante cut the Mississippi lead to one goal with his 9th tally of the season. The Dearborn, Michigan native ripped a one timer fromt he slot past Underhill off of a feed from Jeff Campbell at 10:39 of the second period. Lane Manson also picked up an assist on the goal as he walked down the left wing wall and dished the puck off to Campbell to set up the play.
Ryan Van Buskirk tied the game up at three as he jammed home a loose puck along the goal line at the 5:28 mark of the third period. Jeff Campbell and Brad Schell added the assists cycling the puck behind the Mississippi net before throwing in front where Van Buskirk was able to jam it home.
Mississippi regained the lead at the 8:29 mark of the third period as Mike Martone snapped the puck past Aceti. O'Leary and LLisabeth added the assists on the tally.
With netminder T.J. Aceti pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Rick Emmett intercepted a Sea Wolves clearing attempt and fed a wide open Chris Durno behind the Mississippi defensemen. Durno walked in on a breakaway and ripped a snapshot over the left shoulder of Underhill to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Sam Ftorek set up Jackson walking wide open down the right wing. The defenseman found his own rebound and flicked the puck past Underhill for the game winner 40 seconds into the overtime session. Brad Schell also had an assist on the game-winning goal.
T.J. Aceti made 21 saves for the Gladiators in the win while Gwinnett went 2-for-4 on the man advantage. With the win, the Gladiators improve to 8-3-4 and remain in sole posession of first place in the ECHL South division.
