Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - In his first game as a Falcon, Jan Sochor scored two goals, including the game-winner, to help lead Fresno to a 5-2 win over the Victoria Salmon Kings on Friday in front of 4,178 at Save Mart Center.
Team captain Dan Tessier broke a scoreless tie by netting his fourth goal of the season at 13:13 of the first period. Tessier took a pass on a power play from defenseman Charles Simard and put a shot from the right circle past Victoria's goalie into the top-right hand corner of the goal.
Kevin Truelson, the Falcons' sole all-star from last season, scored his second goal of this year by sneaking a wrist shot past the opponents' goalie, Jason Stone, at 13:12 into the second period. Stone had to deal with a flock of Falcons, along with several of his own defenders, all clustered right in front of his goal. Mike Kiesman and Dustin VanBallegooie were credited with assists after several other attempts nearly made it in during the fast and furious exchange. Mike Barrie responded for the Salmon Kings when he scored a power play goal by blazing a slap shot from just inside the Falcons' blue line, which bounced off goaltender Brett Jaeger's glove and into the net.
Victoria was able to carry that momentum into the third period and finally tied the score at two when Jason Hegberg scored at 7:13 off a rebound from a Jaeger save. The newest member of the Falcons, Sochor was able to stop Victoria's momentum by scoring his first goal of the season at 12:23 into the third.
The game unraveled for Victoria after that score. Sochor scored again, on a power play five minutes after his first goal, and Fresno put the game out of reach twelve seconds later when Shaun Sutter scored on another power play for a 5-2 lead with just over two minutes left in regulation.
The victory was Fresno's third in a row, and fifth straight at home, to improve its record to 6-7-1 on the year. The Falcons head to San Diego to face the Gulls tonight, then travel to Bakersfield Thursday, Dec. 2, and end the road trip in Long Beach, Saturday, Dec. 4. Fresno's next home game will be against the Greenville Grrrowl, Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.
Tickets are on sale for the game on Dec. 7 against the Grrrowl for as low as $8 per seat and may be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
