Pride Down Checkers 3-2 for Third Straight Win

FLORENCE, SC -- Mark Mullen scored a goal and an assist and Nick Boucher made 31 saves as the Pee Dee Pride (10-4-2) won their third consective game Saturday night, downing the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 in front of 2,463 fans at the Florence Civic Center.

With the win, the Pride pull to within one point of the Checkers for first place in the East Division, are now 5-0-1 in their last six games.

The teams traded goals through the first period and a half. Charlotte started the scoring 5:36 into the contest on a power-play goal by Mike Harder.

Pee Dee tied the game with 2:24 remaining in the opening period. Mark Mullen gathered in a loose puck on the near wall, and skated in on net and beat Alex Westlund with a wrist shot to the glove side.

Charlotte went back on top just 2:41 into the middle frame. Just four seconds after a power-play expired, Lee Falardeau chipped a shot past Boucher for his sixth of the season.

But, the Pride came back to tie it again at 6:59. Tyler Kindle hit Chad Spurr streaking through the neutral zone, and Spurr zipped a slap shot to the far post for his second of the season.

Brian Collins scored the game-winner with 2:21 left in the middle period, beating Westlund on a goal-mouth scramble. It was Collins' team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Pee Dee returns home for three games next weekend. The Pride host Charlotte on Friday at 7:30, and then host the Florida Everblades in back-to-back games on Saturday (7:30) and Sunday (2:30).
