Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes saw their second-half record fall to 17-7 tonight with a 4-3 loss to the Joliet JackHammers before a CanWest Global Park record crowd of 7,729.

Les Norman (3-4, 2B, RBI) hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh to score Anthony Monegan with the game winner as Steve Hecker (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 SO) improved to 5-4. Joey Cramblitt (6.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) fell to 8-4 with the loss.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the bottom of one when Brent Sachs (2-4, HR, R, 2 RBI) led off with his sixth home run. Joliet tied it and took the lead in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Derek Kopacz (2-4, 2 RBI) singled to score Troy Cameron and Steve Foley to make it 2-1. But the Goldeyes came right back in the bottom of four when Greg Morrison hit his eleventh home run with two out to square it.

The teams traded runs in the fifth before the JackHammers regained the lead for good in the seventh. Sean Jones and Byron Embry then pitched an inning each of shutout relief before Brent Franklin entered in the ninth to pick up his fifth save and second in as many days.

These same two teams conclude this series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Brad Purcell (7-2, 2.53) goes for us while Rich Hyde (8-5, 3.12) replies for them.
