Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
(GARY, IND.) â Both teams got complete games from their starting pitchers, but rookie RHP Sazi Guthrie prevailed in a pitching duel with RHP Richie Burgess, as the Gary SouthShore Railcats beat the Birds 4-1 Saturday night.
Sioux Falls scored its only run in the top of the first, when a singly by 3B Felix Pagan drove home 2B Clemente Bonilla, both of whom had at least two hits for the second straight night. The Birds' offense was silent after that, however, managing just four more hits over the final eight frames off Guthrie.
The Railcats took a 3-1 lead with a big third inning, when CF Billy Brown was hit by an 0-2 pitch from Burgess and scored immediately on a triple by 2B Digz Edwards. An error by CF Tyrone Pendergrass allowed 1B Wes Chamberlain to reach, but kept Edwards at third for the moment, but C Rene Pinto and 3B Sean Murphy each followed with RBI-singles before Burgess struck out the side to end the rally. DH Tim Flaherty hit his 13th home run three innings later to cap the game's scoring.
Despite losing his fifth game, Burgess became the only pitcher besides RHP Chad Johnson to go the distance in a game for the Canaries this season. He also struck out eight Railcats hitters, setting a new Canaries season high, besting Johnson's seven of a night previous.
Sioux Falls takes on Gary in the finale tomorrow afternoon, sending LHP Danny Prata (0-0, 3.00) to the mound for his first start with the Canaries. He will be opposed by RHP Daniel Soria (2-8, 6.39) in a 1 p.m. start.
