GARY - Gary SouthShore RailCats pitcher Sazi Guthrie tossed his second consecutive complete game to lead the RailCats to a 4-1 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries in front of 3,808 fans at U. S. Steel Yard.

Guthrie (7-4), who was won each of his last four starts, scattered six hits and two walks while striking out five. Guthrie yielded a first inning run, then blanked the Canaries the rest of the way, throwing 105 pitches, 68 for strikes. Guthrie only retired the Canaries in order twice, but also did not allow consecutive hits apart from Clemente Bonilla's triple followed by Felix Pagan's RBI-single in the first.

Guthrie has won 4 of 5 decisions at U. S. Steel Yard this season. The rookie right-hander's seven wins ties the RailCats single-season high, established in 2002 by Mike Riley.

The RailCats broke through for three runs in the third inning off Canaries starter Richie Burgess, who also went the route. Burgess hit Billy Brown with an 0-2 pitch, and Digz Edward followed with an RBI-triple to center field to tie the game. Edwards remained at third as Wes Chamberlain hit a fly ball to shallow center field, but Chamberlain reached when Sioux Falls CF Tyrone Pendergrass dropped the ball. Rene Pinto laced an RBI-single to right field, scoring Edwards with the go-ahead run and sending Chamberlain to third, and Sean Murphy followed with an RBI-single up the middle to plate Chamberlain.

Tim Flaherty hit his league-leading 13th homer leading off the sixth inning, to give the RailCats a 4-1 lead.

The RailCats (10-14 second half, 25-44 overall) conclude the weekend series with the Sioux Falls Canaries Sunday at U. S. Steel Yard (1 p.m. first pitch). Each of the first 500 kids (13 & under) inside the U. S. Steel Yard gates Sunday receives a Rusty the RailCat Doll (bobblehead or stuffed). After the game, kids can run the bases.
