Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals could not pick up a standings point for the fifth straight game as they fell to the Trenton Titans by an 8-5 score. The loss dropped Elmira's record to 20-16-4 on the season.
The first period got off to an inauspicious start for the Jackals as Trenton opened the scoring 90 seconds in. Working from the side of the net, Jacob Cepis sent a pass through the slot to Connor Goggin just below the top of the circles. The Titans defenseman had the entire goal to shoot for as Elmira goalie Maxime Clermont was drawn out of position by Cepis. The goal was Goggin's third of the season. Elmira answered back quickly with Artem Demkov netting his 22nd of the season on assists by Dustin Gazley and Louie Caporusso. The game remained even for a long stretch before the Titans scored a pair 14 seconds apart to open up some distance. Andy Bombach capitalized on the power play at 12:23 then Kory Nagy followed with his third of the season off of the ensuing faceoff. Trenton tacked on its fourth courtesy of David Laliberte at 16:10 and chased Clermont from the net. He stopped eight of the 12 shots he faced. Ian Keserich made his Jackals debut as he came on in relief for the remainder of the game. The Jackals responded to the goalie change well and Demkov netted his second of the night with 1:33 left in the opening period to pull Elmira within one.
In the second period, captain Jean Bourbeau brought the sellout crowd of just over 3,800 to its feet with a rocket shot for a shorthanded goal. Jordan Pietrus and Steven Kaunisto picked up the assist as Bourbeau beat Scott Wedgewood for his second shorthanded goal of the season from the left wing hash mark at 5:26. Trenton responded with a pair of goals, though, and left Elmira down by three heading into the third period. Drew Pallis scored on a wrist shot from the high slot at 12:30 and was followed up by Jacob Drewiske pounding home a rebound at 16:43. Keserich faced 12 shots total in the second and swatted away nine of them.
Elmira started the third period with a solid push back, and eventually closed within one, with Matt Campanale providing the spark. The defenseman cut loose a slap shot from the right point that was deflected by Brandon Blandina at 6:24 for the rookie's third goal of the season. Just over ten minutes later Campanale put one home himself with a slapper from almost the exact same position. It was Campanale's second of the season and first since November 10 in Orlando. The Jackals were smelling a tie, but had their hopes dashed when Justin Taylor scored 19 seconds after Campanale's tally. Keserich was pulled for the extra attacker with just under 2:30 remaining, but Cepis scored into the empty net to salt away the win for Trenton.
Keserish was saddled with the loss as he stopped 19 of 22 shots. The Jackals ended the night 4-for-5 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.
