Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, PA - Jacob MacDonald scored just 20 seconds into overtime to give the Jackals a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Reading Royals. Justin Bernhardt and Colin Jacobs each scored in regulation for Elmira, and both goals overcame one-goal deficits. Shane Owen made 23 saves to earn his eighth win in nine starts as a Jackal, as Elmira moved into a four-way tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 76 points this season.
The Royals opened the scoring as Ian Watters completed a perfectly executed three-on-two, shorthanded rush, at 5:19 of the first period. Scott Tanski and Nick Luukko earned assists on the goal.
The Jackals responded at the 7:09 mark of the second period, when Justin Bernhardt ripped a wristshot past Adam Morrison on a two-on-one rush. The goal was assisted by Matt Garbowsky. It ended a seven period shutout streak for Morrison against the Jackals this season.
Less than four minutes later, former Jackal, Yannick Tifu again burned his old team scoring on a beautiful pass from Kevin Goumas. It was Tifu's 16th goal of the year, and 5th against the Jackals.
The Jackals would again respond to tie the score late in the second period, as Colin Jacobs deflected a Nathan Oystrick backhand into the Reading net. Darcy Murphy also picked up an assist on the game-tying goal, his first pro assist. Jacobs continued to torment the Royals this year, as this was his 5th goal against Reading this season.
Both teams played a conservative third period, eager to earn at least a point in this critical contest. Shane Owen stopped all six shots he faced, while Adam Morrison turned all eight shots he faced aside. The game headed to the extra frame, tied at 2-2.
It would only take 20 seconds of overtime play before Jacob MacDonald buried a perfect centering pass from Chris Langkow into the net to give the Jackals the vital extra point. It was MacDonald's second overtime winner in the last four games. Guy LeBoeuf also recorded an assist on the game-winner.
Shane Owen made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn the win for the Jackals, to improve his record to 8-1-0 with Elmira. Adam Morrison also played well, but gave up three goals on 31 shots, earning the OTL.
