Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals fell behind 3-0 and 4-1 before losing 4-3 to the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, S.C. The Jackals scored two second-period goals to make it a one goal contest, but could do no more as they fell for the second straight game.
The Stingrays jumped out of the gate with three quick goals. Keith Johnson scored at 1:26 of the first period from Nikita Kashirsky and Trent Campbell. Kashirsky then scored a goal of his own at 4:25 from Johann Kroll and Matt Fornataro, and Josh Godfrey capped the rush with a drive from the blue line at 6:20 of the first period that flew past goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak to make it 3-0 in favor of South Carolina.
Elmira fought back at 12:30 of the first period, with a goal from Justin Donati on a feed from Tyler Donati, the first time the two brothers combined for a goal since Nov. 15 at Charlotte. That made it 3-1, with Chanse Fitzpatrick being credited with an assist as well.
Rob Ricci scored for South Carolina late in the first at 19:36 to give the Stingrays a three-goal cushion entering the intermission. Godfrey's long shot was stopped by Teslak who kicked it into the slot to Ricci who fired it past the Jackals netminder for the 4-1 advantage.
The first of the Jackals two second-period goals came at 7:51. Yannick Tifu won a faceoff to South Carolina goaltender Braden Holtby's right. Tifu skated toward the net, and then found Fitzpatrick in front who scored his 13th goal of the season to make it 4-2.
Later in the period, Tifu found Justin Donati in the left circle with Holtby out of position, and Donati buried the shot for his 11th goal of the season at 14:03 to bring the Jackals to within one at 4-3.
However, the South Carolina defense held the Jackals to five third period shots on Holtby, and the league's two highest scoring third period offenses went without a goal in the final session, as South Carolina prevailed 4-3 in North Charleston.
Holtby made 27 saves on 30 Jackals shots to improve to 7-2-1-2 on the season. Teslak fell to 5-5-1-1, stopping 21 of 25 Stingrays bids.
With the loss, Elmira fell three points behind the Reading Royals for first place in the American East Division, with the Royals defeating the Trenton Devils 3-2 on Saturday night. The Jackals are 10-8-2-1 entering Sunday's 4:00 p.m. game with the Stingrays.
