Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON - With a chance to clinch the team's first division championship, the Brockton Rox came up on the wrong side of a 10-1 score in the series opener with the New Jersey Jackals.

Jackals starter Issac Pavlik went eight innings, giving up one run on four hits. Pavlik (7-5) matched his season high by striking out nine Rox batters for the third time this year.

The Jackals (21-22) pulled ahead in the second inning when Kevin Dattola scored on a single by Matt Hegan to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Jackals scored twice. Zach Smithlin and Benji Gil reached base with back to back bunt singles. After Elvis Corporan reached on a fielder's choice, Francisco Lebron singed to score Smithlin and give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning Dattola singled to score Corporan to give the Jackals a 3-0 lead.

The Jackals pulled away in the sixth inning. Dattola picked up his second RBI of the night singling in Steve Checksfield to make it 4-0. After Matt Hegan walked, Mike Rucci doubled to score Checksfield and Hegan and give the Jackals a 6-0 lead. Three batters later, Corporan smashed a three-run homer to put New Jersey up 9-0.

Jersey would score once more in the seventh inning. The Rox (28-15) got their only run of the 10-1 loss in the eighth when Willie King scored on a single by Andrew Salvo.

Rox starting pitcher Brad Guy went five innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. Guy (1-4) took the loss for Brockton.

The Rox loss, coupled with the North Shore Spirit sweeping their doubleheader with the Can-Am Grays, kept the Rox from clinching the division championship. In south division action, the New Haven County Cutters defeated Worcester Tornadoes, 11-6. The win for the Cutters ensures them no less than a tie for the south division title, officially eliminating the New Jersey Jackals from playoff contention.

The Rox will get another shot at clinching the division title on Saturday when they host the New Jersey Jackals in the second game of the four-game series. Right-hander Grant Dorn will start for the Rox. Josh Brey will take the ball for New Jersey.
