Gedman named Manager of the Year

Published on September 2, 2005 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Worcester manager Rich Gedman has been named the Can-Am League's Manager of the Year, as voted upon by the eight league managers.

Gedman has led the first-year club to a first-half championship and a 49-39 record through Friday; the Tornadoes are also still in contention for a second-half title. He will lead the Tornadoes into their first postseason in team history next week.

"This is not a one-man award," said Gedman. "This has a lot to do with the team and a lot to do with the coaching staff. I wouldn't be in this position were it not for them."

"I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award," said Worcester president and CEO Alan Stone. "Rich's leadership has been exemplary and his contribution to the team immeasurable, especially for a club in our inaugural season.

"On behalf of the organization and all Tornadoes fans, I'd like to express how proud we are of what Rich and the entire team have accomplished this season."

The Worcester native played 1033 games over 13 seasons with three major league clubs. A catcher, Gedman was the The Sporting News' American League Rookie of the Year in 1981 and the starting catcher on the Red Sox' 1986 American League championship team. He was a two-time American League All-Star (1985-6), and played in 18 postseason games, posting a .292 average with 3 HRs. He also caught the first nine innings of the "Longest Game," the 33-inning marathon between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings in 1981. After ten-plus seasons in Boston, Gedman played part of one season in Houston and two more in St. Louis.

In 2003, he joined the coaching staff of the North Shore Spirit, and helped to lead the club to two playoff appearances in their first two seasons.
