Cutters Punch Ticket to Playoffs with 11-6 Victory
September 2, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
Needing only one win in their last four games to clinch a playoff spot, the New Haven County Cutters took care of business quickly, jumping on the Worcester Tornadoes early in Friday night's contest, before eventually winning 11-6. A crowd of 3120, the largest at Yale Field this season, was on hand to witness the decisive victory.
Shortstop Chas Terni set the tone for what was to be an impressive offensive display for the Cutters when he belted his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first. New Haven County scored 10 runs in the first five innings, with critical hits coming off the bat of Bill Peavey and Keto Anderson, leaving little doubt that the team was heading for the playoffs.
Peavey, having struck out twice in his first two at bats against Worcester's starter Mike Cox, finally got a pitch to his liking and launched a towering home run that landed somewhere on the Yale football practice fields. His team leading 15th homer plated two runs. Anderson would drive in three runs on the night, with two coming on a line drive triple to the right-centerfield gap in the bottom half of the fifth.
New Haven County's starter Courtney Hall (6-4) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs, three of which came in the top of the third. The Tornadoes added another run the following inning when Andy Brown connected with his 20th long ball of the season, a solo shot. Hall would settle down and not allow another run for his final two innings.
The Cutters got to Cox (4-6) often and chased him from the game after four and two thirds innings. He allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits.
After starting the night 4 for 4, with two doubles and two singles, Derrick Gibson missed a chance to tie the league record for hits in a game when he fouled out to the catcher in his last at bat. He drove in two on the night.
The Tornadoes registered 12 hits on the night, the same number as the Cutters, led by Alex Nunez's 3 for 4 performance. But they were unable to mount any sort of challenge late in the game as the Cutters cruised to victory and their first playoff berth.
Friday's game was the first of a four-game set. The Cutters send Jarrett Stawarz (8-7) to the hill to square off against Worcester's Junior Guerrero (5-3) on Saturday at 7:05. These two teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs, a best of five series beginning in Worcester on Wednesday.
