Jackals Can Clinch Playoff Spot At Home Friday

March 25, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals can lock up a spot for the 2010 Kelly Cup Playoffs at First Arena on Friday night at 7:35 p.m as they take on the Trenton Devils.

The Jackals, currently up by 11 points on the Gwinnett Gladiators - the only team that could beat out the Jackals for a playoff berth that is not already in the top eight in the conference - need a win over Trenton to seal the berth. An overtime or a shootout loss would make it so that Gwinnett could still tie Elmira by winning its final six games and potentially beat out the Jackals for a playoff spot by virtue of having more wins in the regular season.

Elmira's division lead over the Reading Royals is five points, and the magic number for the Jackals to clinch their first ECHL division title is nine points gained by the Jackals or lost by the Royals or any combination of those two adding up to nine points.

The Jackals have had some thrilling games against the Devils at home this season. Their game on Nov. 6 saw the Jackals attempt to tie the ECHL record for wins to begin a season and on Nov. 29 the Jackals set an ECHL record against the Devils for fewest shots on goal allowed in a game, limiting Trenton to eight over three periods. The Jackals and the Devils also combined for 113 penalty minutes on Oct. 31 in a 4-1 Jackals win.

The Puppy Patch will be sponsoring Wiener Dog Races as well in between the first and second periods at First Arena on Friday, so the game promises to be action packed.
