Wilson Tobs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Andrew Istler held the Fayetteville SwampDogs hitless for 6.2 innings on Thursday night at JP Riddle Stadium, but was able to go the distance on the mound as the Wilson Tobs earned its first road victory of the 2012 season picking up an 8-1 win.
Wilson (7-14) opened the scoring in the third inning against Gary Ashcraft (L 0-1) when Phillip Williams singled to begin the frame and scored on a Zack Houchins single.
The Tobs kept the 1-0 lead until they added some insurance in the sixth. Zack Lee walked to start the inning and later stole second but touched home on a bloop hit to right field by Aaron Rea for the two-run lead.
However, the Tobs were not done scoring as they put up a pair of runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back doubles from Jackson Slaid and Collins Cuthrell to plate another run. Wilson's final run of the inning came on a safety squueze from Lee which gave the Tobs a 4-0 advantage.
Fayetteville (12-8) were kept off balance all night long by Istler (W, 1-0) who saw his no-hit bid end in the last of the seventh when Sal Giardina launched a home run over the wall in right field to break up the shut out and the no-hit attempt.
The Tobs added three runs in their half of the eighth inning against the SwampDogs bullpen to bust the game wide open before putting more runs on the board in their final at bat to give Wilson its first road win of the season in their ninth try, earning the 8-1 victory over the SwampDogs.
Wilson and Fayetteville will renew their vows on Friday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. It will be a 70's theme night in Wilson with first pitch slated for 7:05.
