Another Blanking For Sharks, 5-0 Over Florence
June 21, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, N.C. - For the second straight game at Buck Hardee Field, the Florence RedWolves (7-12) were the visitors. For the second straight time, the Wilmington Sharks (13-9) sent them packing as losers, this time with a 5-0 victory. It was the third shutout of the season for Wilmington.
Despite a high pitch count that neared 100, Sharks starter Nick Price lasted five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out five. Due to another great start on the other side of the field, Price got no run support before he exited and took his third no-decision of the summer.
The only early signs of offense from either team came in the first inning when Florence loaded the bases with only one out, but Price fanned Devin Caldwell and induced a ground ball by J.D. Crowe to end the threat. From there on out, it was smooth sailing for both Price and Derek Vaughn until the bottom of the sixth.
A walk to Casey Goss put him on to start the frame, and he worked quickly around on an Aaron Preston sacrifice bunt, a Lloyd Enzor single and a Zach Stephens sacrifice fly. Enzor also came around to score on Scott Coleman's double.
Vaughn's night was over after that inning, but the Sharks also jumped on his only reliever, Ryan Leach, in the eighth inning to tack on three more runs. In that frame, it was another walk that began the rally with Cole McInturff drawing the base on balls. Grayson Atwood moved him to second with a single before both McInturff and Atwood both crossed home plate on Jeff May's double. May later came home on a wild pitch to give the Sharks their final 5-0 margin.
The Sharks take off on a four game road trip to Florence, Peninsula, Petersburg and Edenton before returning home to face Team USA on Tuesday. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, find Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
