Wilmington Sharks News Release
WILMINGTON, NC - The Sharks are pleased to announce the return of the Read Around the Bases, a program which is designed to give teachers a tool - Sharks tickets - they can use to reward students who accomplish their reading goals. The very popular reading program took a hiatus in 2021 and 2022 due to Covid concerns.
Individual teachers determine the reading goals for their students and the time frame of the program. The Sharks will provide a pair of tickets to each student who accomplishes their goals as determined by the teacher. The tickets can be used for either of two Read Around the Bases Nights - Wednesday, June 7 or Monday, June 12.
The Sharks are supporting the program by team personnel reading to students and Sharky appearances at schools. The Sharks will also provide bookmarks to all interested schools.
Participation in Read Around the Bases is open to all elementary and middle schools within the Cape Fear Region. To participate, teachers and school leaders may contact Sharks Director of Community Relations, Tom Lamont at tom@wilmingtonsharks.com. The Sharks will also be reaching out and inviting schools to participate.
"At the height of this program pre-Covid we had more than two dozen schools participate in Read Around the Bases," said Tom Lamont. "Read Around the Bases is a great way for the Sharks to use their profile as a way to highlight the importance of literacy to students."
On Reading Around the Bases Nights at Buck Hardee Field, students who attend will be invited on the field for a pre-game ceremony while the participating schools recognized.
