Slack Signs with Rangers
June 21, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Forest City Owls News Release
Forest City, NC- Owls starting pitcher Ryne Slack signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers yesterday. The lefty leaves Forest City after recording a 4.24 ERA in 17 innings over three starts this season and no decisions. "It feels great," Slack said of the deal, "It really is a dream come true."
Slack, a sophomore from Spartanburg Methodist College, was planning a transfer to USC-Aiken for next year if he wasn't going to be selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. "After I didn't get drafted, I was still hearing from scouts almost every day," said Slack. He said there were several teams that wanted to see him pitch more than he had with the Pioneers during the season, and the Owls afforded him that opportunity. "It was the best thing I could have done," said Slack.
"Ryne was great for us," said Owls head Coach Phil Disher. "He gives you a chance to win every time he takes the mound." Slack's last appearance was his best start with Forest City. The lefty went six innings, allowing just two hits and one run against the Asheboro Copperheads. Slack said the organization will have him join the Rangers Arizona League team.
The Owls travel to Gastonia tonight for a doubleheader. Forest City's next home game is Friday, an exhibition game against the U.S Military All-Stars.
