June 21, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Forest City Owls News Release
Gastonia, NC- The Forest City Owls held on to a lead in Game 1, and came back to take the lead in Game 2, sweeping a doubleheader from the Gastonia Grizzlies on Thursday night. The Owls won the first game 2-1, and took the second game 6-3. With the sweep, Forest City is now in sole possession of first place in the CPL's Western Division. Gastonia pitchers doled out nine walks in the second game, helping Forest City dig out of a 2-0 hole.
All five of the Owls' runs came in the top of the 5th inning. Grizzlies' starter Matt Lengel loaded the bases after getting the first two outs of the inning. Reliever Dakotah Thomas came in and walked three batters, giving the Owls the lead. Chris Bossenberry replaced him and allowed two more runs on a hit batter and another walk. All told, the Owls sent eleven men to the plate in the 5th inning, with eight of them reaching.
The Owls held off a late charge by the Grizzlies to win Game 1 of the twin bill. Jake Padgett pitched two innings of relief to earn his second save of the year. He came in to the game in the 6th inning after Bryce Danielson walked the only two batters he faced to start the inning. Padgett would get out of the 6th unscathed, but gave up a run on a double by David Reid-Foley. Then, with the tying run on third base and the winning run on first, Padgett coaxed a double play ball out of Jordan Hunt to give the Owls the win.
Ryan Tezak picked up his second straight win with five shutout innings in Game 1. Nate Cudney grabbed the win with two scoreless innings of relief in Game 2. Seven different Forest City players recorded an RBI. Stephen Tarkenton picked up a hit in both games, extending his streak to eight, matching Nate Chong for the longest by an Owls' player this year.
