Isotopes Take Fourth-Straight with 5-1 Win Over Memphis
June 9, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Renyel Pinto allowed just a run on four hits over five innings Friday night to pace the Albuquerque Isotopes (37-25) to their fourth-straight victory in a 5-1 triumph over Memphis (21-39) at Isotopes Park.
After trailing by a run early, Albuquerque notched a three-run fourth inning and single tallies in each of the next two frames to run away with the win. Pinto (4-1) earned the win, scattering four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. The lone blemish on Pinto's line was a third-inning sacrifice fly by Memphis' John Nelson. Ross Wolf earned a hold, throwing two scoreless innings. Chris Resop threw a spotless eighth and Joe Horgan delivered a 1-2-3 ninth.
Paul Hoover and James Shanks finished with matching 2-for-4 nights with two RBI and a run scored. Scott Seabol also had two hits-including a solo homer in the 4th, his league-leading 17th. Shanks hit a solo shot of his own in the sixth to round out the âTopes offense for the evening.
Redbirds starter Randy Leek (2-6) took the loss. He surrendered five runs on 10 hits through six innings. Two Memphis relievers-Andy Cavazos and Brian Falkenborg-came on to toss two scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
The Redbirds took control early, manufacturing a run in the third for a 1-0 lead. That advantage wouldn't stand long, though, as the âTopes fired back with three in the bottom half of the fourth. Seabol led off the inning with a homer, Hoover hit an RBI double to left and Shanks knocked home a run with a single to right to put Albuquerque in the driver's seat, 3-1.
In the fifth, it was again Hoover, this time with an RBI single that chased home the fourth Isotopes Run. Shanks' solo shot in the sixth put the âTopes up 5-1 and the bullpen never budged, sealing Albuquerque's fourth-straight win.
Coupled with a 4-1 Round Rock loss to Iowa on Friday night, the Isotopes are now 2.5 games ahead of the Express in the Pacific Coast League's American Southern Division.
Albuquerque and Memphis will hook up again on Saturday, with a 7:05 p.m. MT start at Isotopes Park. The âTopes are set to send Nic Ungs (6-5, 3.48) to the slab, and the Redbirds will counter with former Isotope Travis Smith (1-1, 2.40).
Saturday's game includes a Beanie Bear giveaway to the first 3,000 fans courtesy Bank of the West and a breathtaking postgame fireworks show. On Sunday, the Isotopes will celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Night with a pink hat giveaway and a game-worn pink jersey silent auction benefiting Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
