River Cats Late Inning Heroics Continue

Sacramento River Cats News Release

West Sacramento, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats came from behind for the second consecutive night to defeat the Portland Beavers, 5-4, in Game 1 of a Friday night doubleheader at Raley Field. Portland led the game, 2-0, entering the bottom of the 7th and final inning, when Nate Espy's 2-run homered tied the game to send the two teams into extra frames (on Thursday night at Raley Field, it was Jason Perry's home run in the Cats' final at bat that sent the game to extra innings). After Portland retook the lead with 2 runs in the top of the 9th, Sacramento answered in the bottom of the inning and Doug Clark's single off the left field wall provided the walk-off RBI. Espy was 2-for-4 with the home run and 2 RBI and Charles Thomas added two hits of his own to lead the Cats offense. For the second straight game, Ron Flores earned the win in relief for the cats and Portland reliever Jim Brower blew a save opportunity and took the loss. As all double-headers in Minor League Baseball consist of 7-inning games, this game was the unusual 9-inning, extra-inning affair.
