Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

'Topes hurler Nic Ungs dealt six excellent shutout innings of four-hit baseball to propel the Albuquerque Isotopes (22-22) to a 3-0 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs (22-23) in the series opener Monday night at Zephyr Field.

Ungs (2-1), making just his fifth start of the 2007 season, didn't allow a batter past second base in a masterful outing to earn the victory. The right-hander, who led the Isotopes with nine wins in a team-high-tying 24 starts a year ago, struck out two and didn't issue a free pass. Doubles in the first and sixth, and harmless singles in the third and fifth innings, were the lone blemishes on Ungs' scoreless line.

Young right-hander Harvey Garcia came out of the bullpen to work 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two. Nate Field earned his fifth save of the season, tossing 1.1 shutout frames.

Veteran Major Leaguer Brain Lawrence (0-3) worked six innings for New Orleans and was the hard-luck loser, allowing just a run on four hits. Lawrence struck out seven and walked one. Former 'Tope Adam Bostick allowed a run on three hits in two innings, and Jon Adkins surrendered a run on a hit, despite striking out the side, in his lone inning of work.

The Isotopes lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the second inning, taking a quick 1-0 lead that would prove to be all Albuquerque would need. Scott Seabol hit a stand-up triple with one away to put a run in scoring position. Two batters later, Chris Ashby lined a two-out double to left to chase home Seabol and give the 'Topes the early lead.

Albuquerque clung to that slim, one-run advantage until the seventh. Again it was Seabol getting things started with an extra-base hit. This time, the 'Topes third baseman smacked a lead-off double to left field. Brett Carroll followed with a line drive single to right field, scoring Seabol for a 2-0 Isotopes lead. It looked as if the 'Topes would do more damage in the frame, but that threat turned up empty. With first and second and nobody out, the next two batters were retired on a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout. Eric Reed kept things alive with a single to load the bases, but the inning ended with a Johnny Raburn fly out, as Albuquerque stranded three.

The 'Topes would add another insurance tally in the ninth. Carroll led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to push the score to 3-0.

With his single in the seventh, Reed extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest by an Isotopes hitter this season. Reed, Seabol and Carroll each picked up two hits in an eight-hit effort for Albuquerque.

The 'Topes and Z's will hook-up again on Tuesday night from Zephyr Field. In game two of the series, Isotopes lefty Chris George (2-3, 4.68) gets the ball and takes on New Orleans right-hander Chan Ho Park (3-2, 5.45). First pitch is set for 6 PM.

The Isotopes return to Albuquerque on May 25 for a four-game Memorial Day Weekend homestand. The club's annual Military Appreciation Weekend is highlighted by a pair of fireworks shows, a camouflage jersey auction and the first Albuquerque Journal Autograph Session of the season. The series comes to a close with a visit from Rockin' Ray & The Amazing Skyy Dogs.
