Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox opened up an eight-game home stand with a 7-6 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday evening at Security Service Field in front of 2,156 fans. Alberto Arias (2-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Jorge De Paula and Chris Begg (1-1) took the loss. Ryan Speier notched his ninth save of the season despite giving up a run in the ninth.

Fresno didn't wait long to get on the board as Clay Timpner led off the game by depositing the second pitch of the contest over the right field wall. De Paula gave up one more hit in the inning, a two-out single to Scott McClain, but was able to work out of the inning without further damage.

In the bottom of the second, the Sox got the run back off of Begg. Ian Stewart led off the inning with a triple to right that fell in front of a diving attempt by the right fielder Nathan Schierholtz and rolled all the way to the wall. Stewart then trotted home on groundout to second by Edwin Bellorin. Seth Smith doubled after that but was stranded on second as Begg struck out Jayson Nix and De Paula to end the inning.

Colorado Springs broke things open in the third as they plated five runs on four hits. With one out, Cory Sullivan doubled and moved to third when third baseman and former Sky Sox player Tomas De La Rosa misplayed a grounder by Sean Barker. Joe Koshansky then doubled in Sullivan and Barker with a liner down the left-field line to make it 3-1. Stewart singled to bring up Bellorin with two runners on and he responded by ripping a three-run blast to left-center. The home run gave Bellorin four RBI in the game and a team-leading 15 RBI at home.

In the fourth, William Bergolla scored to cut the lead to 6-2 as he doubled with two outs and then moved to third and then scored on two consecutive wild pitches. Fresno cut into the lead further in the fifth as they plated three runs. Timpner tripled and came around to score on a RBI groundout by Luis Figueroa, Schierholtz singled and stole second before McClain drove him in with a RBI single to left, and Bergolla doubled in McClain to make it 6-5.

Clint Barmes helped increase the Sox lead to 7-5 in the sixth. Smith and Nix led off inning with back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a groundout by pinch-hitter Tim Olson. Barmes then lifted a soft single into right to plate Smith.

Game two tomorrow night will feature RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3, 7.65) for the Sox versus RHP Matt Kinney (3-4, 3.91). Game time is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
