Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE - Nashville Sounds right-hander Yovani Gallardo has been named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher-of-the-Week for the May 14-20 period.

Gallardo, ranked as the Milwaukee Brewers' top prospect and as the 16th-best prospect in minor league baseball by Baseball America prior to the season, struck out 11 batters over six innings of scoreless one-hit ball in a victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Thursday, May 17 at Greer Stadium.

The 21-year-old opened the game with 5 1/3 hitless frames before Eric Reed tripled off the right field wall to account for the only knock the right-hander surrendered on the evening. His 11 strikeouts were his second double-digit K total of the season; he fanned a career-best 12 on April 14 at New Orleans.

Gallardo continued his mastery of the Pacific Coast League hitters with the strong effort, dropping his ERA to a league-best 2.22 on the year. He co-leads the circuit with five victories.

The right-hander, who has gone 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA over his last seven starts (8er/43.2ip), took over the minor-league strikeout lead with 66 K's on the season.

In addition to holding the outright strikeout lead, the youngster ranks 2nd among minor-league starting pitchers in batting average allowed (.161) and is 3rd in strikeouts per nine innings (12.21).

For the season, Gallardo has posted a 5-1 record and a 2.22 ERA (12er/48.2ip) in eight starts for Nashville. He has struck out 66 batters while walking only 16 in his 48 2/3 innings.

His award is the first accumulated by a Sounds player during the 2007 season. Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez was the last Nashville player to take home a weekly PCL award, earning league honors for the July 10-16, 2006 period.

Gallardo will take the hill for his next start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium against Memphis when the Sounds face the division-rival Redbirds in the second game of a four-game series.
