Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Guillermo Moscoso pitched 7 1/3 hitless innings and the Iowa Cubs became the first team to shutout the Albuquerque Isotopes this season, 3-0, on Friday night before a roaring crowd of 14,098 at Principal Park.
Isotopes catcher Damaso Espino spoiled the no-hit bid with an opposite-field double, down the right-field line, with one out in the eighth inning. The capacity crowd gave Moscoso a standing ovation for his effort.
Moscoso (7-5) retired the next two batters to end the eighth inning. He struck out five and threw exactly 100 pitches in eight scoreless innings. Moscoso walked two -- Rob Rasmussen in the third inning and Elian Herrera in the sixth. The only other baserunner was Espino reaching on an error by second baseman Logan Watkins in the sixth inning.
Chasing a no-hitter, or completing one, is nothing new to Moscoso. He pitched 7 2/3 hitless innings in the majors on Sept. 7, 2011 for the Oakland Athletics, before Kansas City's Salvado Perez broke up his no-no bid. That was part of a stretch where Moscoso retired 30 consecutive batters, setting an Oakland record. In 2007, while pitching for Oneota in the New York-Penn League, Moscoco fired a nine-inning perfect game at Batavia.
I-Cubs closer Brian Schlitter completed the one-hit shutout in the ninth inning, walking one and striking out one, to pick up his 11th save in 11 chances.
The last time this Isotopes were no hit was by four Colorado Springs pitchers (Franklin Morales, Chris George, Matt Daley and Steven Register) on May 11, 2008 at Colorado Springs. The Isotopes have never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter in their 11-year history.
Moscoso had no margin for error for most of the game because the Isotopes starting pitcher Rasmussen (0-3) was matching him with scoreless innings. The first run came in the fourth inning, when third baseman Elian Herrera's two-base throwing error set the stage for Darnell McDonald to single home Junior Lake.
In the seventh, after a single by McDonald and second baseman Justin Sellers dropped a popup, J.C. Boscan doubled home two runs for a 3-0 lead. Rasmussen (0-3) allowed five hits and one walk, struck out six, and two of the three runs were unearned off him.
The loss snapped the Topes four-game winning streak. Game three of the four-game series is Saturday night, starting at 6:05 pm MT. Jonathan Sanchez starts for the Isotopes, while Chris Rusin goes for the I-Cubs. Listen to all the action on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
