Marks, Herrera Combine for 6th Shutout of Season
July 13, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Behind seven scoreless innings from starter Justin Marks and two innings from reliever Kelvin Herrera, the Omaha Storm Chasers (44-52) notched their sixth shutout of the season and third at Werner Park in a 2-0 win over the Round Rock Express (53-44). The win moves the Chasers to within 3.5 games of division-leading Iowa, as the Cubs lost to Albuquerque tonight in Des Moines.
Marks scattered six hits over his seven innings of work in his longest Triple-A scoreless start and tied his longest scoreless outing, which he has done six times in his professional career. The left-hander has put together three consecutive wins after suffering the loss in his previous seven starts, and during those three straight wins he has allowed only three runs in 21.2 innings while fanning 20 after striking out five tonight. Marks has factored in to the decision in 14 of his 15 career Triple-A starts.
Right-hander Kelvin Herrera came in after Marks' exit and nearly tossed two perfect innings to finish the shutout, save for a hit batter in the eighth inning. Herrera has put together 11.0 straight shutout innings in his last five appearances dating back to June 27, and has pitched multiple innings in the Storm Chasers last three shutouts. Herrera has nine scoreless appearances in his ten for Omaha this season, as well as 20 of his 24 career outings at the Triple-A level.
Designated hitter Max Ramirez accounted for both of the runs scored by the Storm Chasers on the night, singling in the first run of the game in the third for his team-leading 46th RBI and scoring in the sixth after leading off the frame with a double. The 2-through-4 hitters totaled seven of the eight hits for Omaha, with Ramirez recording his sixth three-hit game this season.
The sixth shutout of the year nearly matches the Chasers seven all of last season. In the series finale tomorrow Omaha will send out their Triple-A All-Star Game representative Chris Dwyer (6-7, 3.45 ERA), who leads the team with 11 quality starts. Dwyer will face off with Round Rock righty Evan Meek (3-4, 4.50 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
