Syracuse, NY (8/31/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 8-3, on Monday night. Lehigh Valley broke a tie with a five-run sixth inning to take the lead for good. Matt Skole had two hits and two RBIs in the loss.
Lehigh Valley (62-75) took the early lead in the final game this year at NBT Bank Stadium between the two teams. Erik Kratz led off the top of the second inning with a single off Chiefs starter Taylor Hill. Lehigh Valley's catcher advanced to second when Kelly Dugan walked. First baseman Tommy Joseph then grounded into a fielder's choice, with Kratz being retired at third. The next batter, Tyler Pastornicky, grounded out to second, which allowed both runners to move up a base. With runners on second and third, Lehigh Valley starter Anthony Vasquez reached on an infield single to drive in Dugan and make the score 1-0.
The IronPigs added to their lead in the top of the third, plating two more runs. Brian Bogusevic led off the frame with a double and then advanced to third on a Tyler Henson groundout. After a lineout, Kratz doubled, scoring Bogusevic from second. Dugan then hit the third Lehigh Valley double of the inning, driving in Kratz and giving a 3-0 advantage to the IronPigs.
Syracuse (61-76) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Emmanuel Burriss walked to begin the inning against left-hander Anthony Vasquez, and Scott Sizemore singled to put runners on first and second with none away. After a Tyler Moore pop out, Jason Martinson walked to load the bases. Matt Skole followed Martinson with a two-RBI single to center that scored Burriss and Sizemore to close the gap to 3-2.
The Chiefs evened the score in the fifth. Dan Butler started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Hill sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Scott Sizemore stroked an 0-2 pitch from Vasquez into right-center field to tie the game.
Despite the Syracuse push, Lehigh Valley opened up the game in the top of the sixth. Sam Runion came in to replace Hill and promptly gave up a leadoff base hit to Joseph. Runion then hit Pastornicky in the face during the next at-bat, though the second baseman stayed in the game. After Vasquez struck out, Chase d'Arnaud reached on a fielding error by Martinson at third, loading the bases. The next batter, Bogusevic, reached on a throwing error by Sizemore at second bsae, scoring Joseph. With the bases still loaded and only one out, Jordan Danks blasted a pinch-hit grand slam off the light tower in right-center field to make the score 8-3.
The Chiefs head to Buffalo on Tuesday for a two-game series against the Bisons. Taylor Jordan is expected to take the mound for the Chiefs opposite Todd Redmond with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
