Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Let's Play 13....AGAIN!
The IronBirds, for the second consecutive Monday, played another 13 inning game. Unlike last week in Staten Island, the IronBirds won last night after Sam Kimmel stroked an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Hector Veloz, who reached on a two out single. Nick Cunningham pitched 1.2 innings of perfect relief and earned his first professional win. The IronBirds out-hit the Renegades 9-7 in the victory.
Streak Snapping...and Continuing
Hector Veloz's two out single in the 13th inning last night snapped a streak of 11 straight IronBirds hitters retired in extra innings. Before Veloz reached, the last IronBird base runner was Anthony Vega, who was caught stealing second base to end the top half of the ninth. Sam Kimmel extended his hitting streak to nine games, while Jared Breen now has a five game hit streak going.
15 Game Losing Streak is over
Last night's win snapped a 15 game losing streak against the Hudson Valley Renegades. The last IronBirds win against the Renegades prior to last night took place on June 19, 2012, in the second game of the 2012 season. That game was also played at Dutchess Stadium. In that game, the IronBirds used a five run fourth inning and a Torsten Boss home run in the fifth en route to an 8-3 win.
Eating up the innings
After last night's game, the IronBirds' pitching staff has logged the second-most innings pitched in the New York-Penn League with 136.1 so far in 2013. The Renegades lead the league with 143.2 innings pitched, while the Lowell Spinners have pitched the fewest innings, with 104.0 total this season. Hudson Valley and Brooklyn lead the league with five extra inning games played this season. Aberdeen is tied for second-most at four with the Staten Island Yankees. The Vermont Lake Monsters are the only team in the league yet to play an extra inning game in 2013.
On the mound tonight...
The IronBirds will send RHP Sebastian Vader to the hill tonight in search of his second consecutive win. He pitched Thursday night in the IronBirds' 7-5 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. Vader went five innings, allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned), and walked two. The two walks were his first two on the season. He will be making his fourth start tonight, and his second on the road. His last road start was at MCU Park, where he fanned ten Cyclones in eight innings of work.
