Vermont And Tri-City Split Twinbill By Identical 2-1 Scores Tuesday

BURLINGTON, VT --- B.J. Boyd hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning of a 2-1 Lake Monsters victory in game one of a doubleheader, then hit a solo home run in the fourth inning of game two for Vermont's only run in a 2-1 loss as the Lake Monsters and Tri-City ValleyCats split a New York-Penn League doubleheader Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.

After Boog Powell reached safely on an error by shortstop Chan Moon to open the bottom of the first inning, Boyd launched a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right field for his first home run of the season. Boyd would later single to finish with of Vermont's three hits in the opener. 

Vermont would make the 2-0 lead stand as starter Brent Powers (3-0) allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over six innings. After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Omar Duran came on in relief of Powers to get a strikeout/caught stealing double play and a groundout to the game for his third save of the season.

Tri-City scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth of the nightcap as Vermont starter Jose Torres allowed Dan Gulbransen to reach on an error to leadoff the inning. After a Luis Alvarez double, the ValleyCats scored their runs on a Jon Kemmer RBI groundout and a Adam Nelubowich RBI infield single.

Boyd collected Vermont's only hit of the second game with a one-out solo home run to rightfield off Tri-City reliever Andrew Walter. For the night, Boyd had three of the Lake Monsters four hits in the two games to a league-leading .407 and is the first Vermont player to homer in two straight games since Sean Jamieson September 3-4, 2011.

Torres (1-2) gave up the two unearned runs on four hits over four innings to take the loss, while Walker allowed just the Boyd solo homer with two strikeouts in four innings of relief for the win. Alvarez had two doubles for Tri-City (12-4), while Pat Christensen struckout the side in the seventh for his first save.

Vermont (6-9) will wrap up the three-game homestand with the ValleyCats on Wednesday afternoon at a special start time  of 1:05 pm.
