Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - One season ago Aaron King was a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants organization. The former 7th round pick led the charge in his Spinners debut, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, combining with Simon Mercedes six shutout innings to propel the Spinners to a 5-2 win over the Connecticut Tigers in Game One of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Lowell (7-6) jumped out to an early lead after the Tigers went down in order in the top half of the first inning. Tzu-Wei Lin led off with a double down the left field line, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Manuel Margot. A Kevin Mager double scored Lin and after a groundout by Kendrick Perkins, Aaron King doubled in his first at-bat as a Spinner, scoring Mager, to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

The Spinners extended the lead in the second inning after a two-out double by Cleuluis Rondon. Lin followed with a single up the middle, scoring Rondon, and putting Lowell ahead, 3-0. Margot followed with a single and Mager walked to load the bases, but Perkins struck out swinging to end the inning.

Connecticut (4-10) had a chance to score in the fifth, but Rondon made a terrific over the shoulder catch, somersaulting after the catch in shallow center field to end the inning.

King and Rondon combined to extend the lead in the fifth inning. A converted pitcher, acquired by the Red Sox out of the American Association in May, King hit a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall for his first affiliated home run, while Rondon delivered a one-out RBI single to put the Spinners ahead, 5-0.

Mercedes (1-0, 1.20) was fantastic for the Spinners, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Jack McGeary closed out the win, allowing two runs when a two-out collision at first base allowed two Tigers to score.

King, Lin, Margot, Rondon and Asuaje each had two-hit games for the Spinners in a well balanced offensive attack.

Game Two will start in approximately 30 minutes with Jonathan Aro (1-0, 2.38) gets the ball for the Spinners who go for the sweep of the Double Header.
