Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Williamsport, PA- The Aberdeen IronBirds fell behind 2-0 after one inning, and did not have a hit through five innings, but came back to beat the Williamsport Crosscutters Monday night, 6-3.
The Crosscutters took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with help from two throwing errors from IronBirds' starter Matthew Grimes, who was making his first professional start. Cord Sandberg laid down a bunt on the first pitch he saw from Grimes and reached first safely. Grimes' throw to first went into right field, allowing Sandberg to get to second. Jiandido Tromp bunted him over to second, and Aaron Brown hit an RBI single to center, allowing Sandberg to score and making it 1-0 Crosscutters.
With Rhys Hoskins at the plate and Brown leading off of first base, Grimes made a pickoff attempt, but the throw was wide of the bag and went deep down the line, allowing Brown to score all the way from first, giving the Crosscutters a 2-0 lead.
Grimes settled down, and allowed just two walks in his remaining two innings. He got a double play and a caught stealing to get out of the second and third innings.
He pitched three innings, allowing two runs (one earned), walking two and striking out one.
The IronBirds would manage just one base runner through the first five innings, a Jamill Moquete two out walk in the second, but got things rolling in the sixth off of Crosscutter starter Brandon Leibrandt.
Steve Wilkerson led off the inning with a double that hit off of the top of the wall in left field. Cory Segui followed with a single that put runners on first and third. Oswill Lartiguez then hit a sac fly that knocked in Wilkerson, getting the IronBirds on the board at 2-1. Justin Viele followed Lartiguez and continued the hit parade. His RBI double scored Segui, tying the game at two. Alex Murphy and Federico Castagnini each followed with RBI doubles, giving the IronBirds a 4-2 lead after the top of the sixth. For Murphy, the double extended his hitting streak to seven games.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jiandido Tromp hit his third home run of the series, getting Williamsport to within 4-3.
Aberdeen would seal it in the top of the seventh. Wilkerson knocked his second double of the game, this one to right field, and he scored on a Segui RBI single to left field. Segui came around to score when Murphy grounded out to third with one out and the bases loaded, and the IronBirds led 6-3 at the seventh inning stretch.
Derrick Bleeker shut the door in the ninth for his second save, striking out Wilmer Oberto with the bases loaded to end the game.
Max Schuh earned his second win, while Leibrandt took the tough luck loss.
The IronBirds will have an off day Tuesday before opening up a six game home stand with the Vermont Lake Monsters Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m.
