Lowell Spinners News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - Last year, the Lowell Spinners could not buy a win on the road, and it prevented them from making the New York-Penn League playoffs. It has been a different story in 2014, however, as the Spinners completed a 4-1 road trip Monday night with a sweep of the Jamestown Jammers, winning Game Two of the doubleheader, 2-1.
The win improved the team to 14-9 on the road, against a dreadful 9-18 record at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (23-27) struck first in the third inning as Deiner Lopez led off with a single and moved to third on an opposite field double by Danny Mars. Mike Meyers then grounded out deep in the hole at shortstop to bring in Lopez with the game's first run.
The Spinners added a run in the fifth as Alixon Suarez singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lopez, slid over to third on a single by Mars and then scored as Meyers grounded out to short yet again.
Jamestown (21-29) broke through with their first run in the doubleheader in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating a run on a double and two singles off of Lowell reliever Kuehl McEachern, but the righthander shutdown the Jammers in the seventh to close out the win.
Spinner starter Kevin McAvoy was able to survive three innings, allowing two hits and getting big help from his defense, especially Mauricio Dubon in the third, who began a double play to kill a Jamestown rally. Brandon Show (1-1, 9.58) and Edwar Garcia followed, each breezing through a 1-2-3 inning before McEachern closed the game, earning the save.
Mars, who had two hits in the first game, collected his second multi-hit game, as the team had seven hits altogether.
The Spinners are off tomorrow and then return home for a six-game homestand Wednesday against the State College Spikes and the Williamsport Crosscutters. Aaron Wilkerson (2-0, 1.50) gets the start as gates open on Bruins Night with Gregory Campbell at 6:00 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
