Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - The Jamestown Jammers found themselves in two more pitchers duels Monday afternoon at Diethrick Park. However, the Lowell Spinners were up to the challenge in both games of Monday's doubleheader, and won game one, 2-0 in eight innings, and game two, 2-1.
Tyler Eppler, the 6th round pick in 2014 out of Sam Houston State, was outstanding on the mound for the Jammers in game 1. He would shut down the Lowell Spinners in five innings of work, while only giving up two hits, one walk, and striking out five.
Lowell starter Jake Drehoff seemingly matched Eppler pitch for pitch. Drehoff would toss six scoreless innings for Lowell, and only surrender three hits, two walks, while striking out one.
With both pitchers dealing, the game would actually remain a scoreless tie after seven innings of play (doubleheaders in the New York-Penn League are seven inning games), and the game would head to extras.
In the top of the eighth, the Spinners would break out for the games only two runs against Jammer reliever, Eric Karch. Lowell designated hitter Nick Moore lead off the inning with a double off Karch through the hole at shortstop. Catcher David Sopilka then moved Moore over to third base with a sac bunt. With Moore on third and one out, center fielder Danny Mars connected on an RBI single, which would score Moore for the first run of the game for either team. Mars would score later in the inning on a single by Lowell third basemen Jordan Betts, to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Spinners.
The Jammers could not mount a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, but second basemen Erik Forgione collected three hits in defeat. Along with Eppler's five shutout innings, Marek Minarik tossed a scoreless sixth inning, and Sam Street tossed a scoreless seventh inning before the Spinners broke through against Karch in the eighth.
Game two would remain scoreless until the top of the third inning, when the Spinners would get one run off Jammers starter, Alex McRae. Second basemen Deiner Lopez started the inning with an infield single, and then advanced to third on a double by the next batter, center fielder Danny Mars. Lopez would then score on a groundout off the bat of Lowell left fielder Mike Meyers, to make the score 1-0 Lowell.
The second Lowell run came in the top of the fifth against McRae, after Meyers grounded into a force out, which would score catcher Alixon Suarez, who singled to reach base earlier in the inning. Despite giving up the two runs, McRae did have a pretty solid evening. In five innings of work, he would surrender the two runs, six hits, and strike out three Spinners. Miguel Rosario would pitch the sixth and seventh for the Jammers, and only surrendered one hit, and no runs.
The lone Jamestown run on the afternoon came in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, as they tried to mount a comeback against Lowell. Right fielder Jordan Luplow doubled through the hole at shortstop to start the rally with one out. After catcher Taylor Gushue popped out for the second out, first basemen Kevin Ross doubled down the left field line to score Luplow, and pull the Jammers within one. Unfortunately, that was the only offense the Jammers could mount, as they would fall 2-1 in game two.
Jamestown now embarks on a six game road trip, with three games against the Connecticut Tigers (August 6th-8th), and the Aberdeen Ironbirds (August 9th-11th). The team will return home Tuesday, August 12th at 7:05pm as they will square of against the Auburn Doubledays. That will be the last $1.50 night of the season. General admission tickets, hot dogs, soda, and Budweiser's will all be available for $1.50! Come on out to the ballpark to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates starts of tomorrow!
