Lake Monsters Win Streak Snapped With 4-2 Loss To Scrappers
August 4, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored four runs on four hits, including a three-run homer from Juan De La Cruz, in the top of the fourth inning to snap the Vermont Lake Monsters three-game winning streak with a 4-1 New York-Penn League victory Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
2014 second-round pick Daniel Gossett made his first start of the season after seven relief appearances and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just a leadoff single in the first inning and striking out three. Third-round pick Brett Graves came on in the third and had two strikeouts in a scoreless inning after a leadoff walk, but the Scrappers got three straight one-out singles in the fourth from Leo Castillo, D'Vone McClure and Taylor Murphy for a 1-0 lead. De La Cruz followed with a long three-run homer to rightfield on an 0-2 pitch from Graves for the 4-0 lead.
Vermont got what would be its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Max Kuhn to score Jose Brizuela. The Lake Monsters would outhit the Scrappers 10-8 on the night, but Vermont was just 3-for-17 at the plate with runners on base (7-for-17 with the bases empty). J.P. Sportman, who earlier in the day was named the NYPL Player of the Week after going 12-for-25 (.480) last week, was 3-for-4 on Monday and Brett Vertigan 2-for-4 as the top three batters in the Vermont lineup were a combined 7-for-13 (rest of lineup 3-for-21).
Yairo Munoz was 2-for-5 with a single in the fifth and double in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the third longest in the league this season and the fifth longest in Vermont history (four short of record 21 straight by David Freitas in 2010). Scrappers starter Jordan Carter allowed one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings, while reliever Luke Eubank (1-1) earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Mahoning Valley (22-29).
Despite the loss, Vermont (21-30) finished with four wins during the six-game homestand and, after a day off on Tuesday, will open a six-game roadtrip at Aberdeen on Wednesday. The Lake Monsters will play three games against the Ironbirds and then three at Auburn against the Doubledays before returning to Centennial Field for another six-game homestand beginning Wednesday, August 12th.
