Win Worth the Wait for Spinners, 2-0

Lowell Spinners News Release

JAMESTOWN, NY - The Lowell Spinners had waited two-plus days to play baseball in Jamestown, and then waited until the eighth inning to break through, scoring two runs to take the first game of a doubleheader, 2-0.

The game was the first in over two days for both teams, as rainy conditions postponed the first two nights of this three-game series.

Lowell (22-27), which won its third game in a row, had a legitimate threat in the top of the sixth inning as Danny Mars singled with one out and advanced all the way to third when a pickoff attempt squirted past Jamestown first baseman Kevin Ross. However, Raymel Flores struck out and Jordan Betts grounded out to end the inning.

In the eighth, Nick Moore doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by David Sopilka and then scored on a single by Mars. After Mars moved to second on a groundout, Betts singled to right to add an insurance run.

Spinner starter Jake Drehoff pitched masterfully through six innings, allowing just three hits while walking two, but was unfortunately not able to stick around to earn a decision. He worked out of jams in the first and third inning, and was helped by a double play ball in the fifth. Ellis Jimenez (3-1, 4.97) pitched a scoreless seventh while Carlos Pinales picked up his league leading 12th save with a scoreless eighth.

Mars and Cisco Tellez led the team with two hits each, with Mars upping his average to .352, which sits atop the New York-Penn League leaders.

Kevin McAvoy (0-2, 5.23) gets the ball for Game 2, which is scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes after Game One finished.
