Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Lowell, MA - The Aberdeen IronBirds opened up a five-game road trip on a losing note as they fell to the Lowell Spinners 5-3 Tuesday night. The loss was the IronBirds fifth in-a-row.
Mike Wright got the start for the IronBirds. After facing the minimum through four innings, he found himself in trouble in the fifth. Seth Schwindenhammer led things off with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two men down, Matt Gedman knocked him in on an RBI-single.
Wynston Sawyer gave the IronBirds the lead in the sixth inning. With one on and nobody out, Sawyer (3) blasted a two-run homer to left field.
Wright left the ball game after five shutout innings. He gave way to the right-hander Ryan Berry. After walking the leadoff batter Matty Johnson, Jose Garcia blasted an RBI-triple to right-center field. Second baseman Dudley Leonora tried to throw Garcia out at third but threw the ball away. Garcia scored, making it 3-2.
The IronBirds tied it up in the eighth. Joe Velleggia and Connor Narron reached on walks. With two on and two outs, Austin Knight hit a game-tying single.
Without getting a hit, the Spinners took the lead in the eighth. With one man down, Luis Lebron walked Johnson. He stole second. Jose Garcia struck out swinging, but it was a wild pitch. Lebron was slow to cover the plate, allowing Johnson to score all the way from second. Garcia got into second safely on the play. He stole third and scored on another wild pitch, making it 5-3.
Aberdeen got its final run in the ninth. Sammie Starr doubled. He reached third on a wild pitch. Leonora knocked him on a ground out to second. Unfortunately for the IronBirds, with two outs Kyle Hoppy popped out to short to end the inning.
Andrew Jones (1-0) got the win after allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Lebron (0-1) took the loss.
The IronBirds and the Spinners will meet in game two of this three-game series Wednesday evening at LeLacheur Park. Aberdeen will have opening night starter Parker Bridwell (2-4, 4.78) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Luis Diaz (3-2, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
