Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds open up a five-game road trip tonight as they take on the Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). The IronBirds dropped their fourth straight game last night to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a final score of 14-3. The game was called after eight innings when a thunderstorm knocked out the power at Ripken Stadium. Aberdeen starting pitcher Matt Hobgood surrendered nine runs, all earned, in 2.2 innings of work. Tonight, the IronBirds look to get back in the win column with right-hander Mike Wright on the hill. Wright, who was the third-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in this year's draft, pitched six shutout innings on the way to his second win of the season his last time out. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Madison Younginer.
Cowan Earns Promotion
The Orioles announced today that right-handed pitcher Jake Cowan has been promoted to the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Despite going 0-4, Cowan led the IronBirds pitchers in ERA (of those who qualify for the New York-Penn League leaders), strikeouts, innings pitched, and starts.
10th Round Pick Joins IronBirds
2011 10th round draft pick Tyler Wilson was promoted from the GCL to Aberdeen today. Wilson is expected to start in Cowan's spot in the rotation. The right-hander went 10-0 with a 2.24 ERA in 19 appearances (16 starts) at the University of Virginia this past spring. Wilson helped pitch the Cavaliers to the College World Series semi-finals, where they fell to the defending champion University of South Carolina. Six of the Orioles top 10 picks from this year's draft are IronBirds.
Masterful Mota
The one bright spot for Aberdeen in last night's 14-3 loss to the Scrappers was reliever Jose Mota. The right-hander tossed a season-high 3.1 shutout innings Monday night. He did not allow a hit. Mota currently leads the team in saves with three.
New Month, Same Dudley
IronBirds second baseman Dudley Leonora picked up two hits and scored a run in last night's loss to the Scrappers. Leonora, who hit a team-best .330 in the month of July, is now leading the IronBirds in batting average. Since being moved to the three-hole in the batting order, Leonora is 3-for-8. Leonora will play the whole 2011 season at just 19-years-old.
