Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Troy, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds nearly blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning Monday evening, but held on to defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 7-6. Win the win, Aberdeen takes two of three from Tri-City, completing the club's first series win of the season.

Aberdeen took a one-run in the first. Chris Clinton was hit by a pitch. He went from first-to-third on Mychal Givens' single to right field. ValleyCats starting pitcher Euris Quezada threw a wild pitch, allowing Clinton to score.

Tri-City took their only lead of the ball game in the second. IronBirds starting pitcher Mike Wright surrendered back-to-back home runs to Bubby Williams and Drew Muren.

Those would be the only runs the Orioles' third-round pick allowed. Wright surrendered two runs on two hits in four innings of work. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four. Wright retired the final nine batters he faced.

The IronBirds took the lead back in the third inning. Glynn Davis reached on a walk. He attempted a steal of second base. On the play, Williams, the Tri-City catcher, threw the ball into center field. Davis moved up to third on the E-2. Givens knocked him in on a ground-out, tying the game. The next hitter, Wynston Sawyer, singled. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground-out. He scored on a passed ball, giving Aberdeen a 3-2 lead.

Aberdeen tacked on another run in the fifth. Givens and Sawyer worked back-to-back one-out walks. Connor Narron lofted a fly ball to left field. The wind carried the ball off the wall. Givens and Sawyer had to hold, thinking the ball would be caught. Givens scored, but Sawyer held at second, limiting Narron to an RBI-single.

In the sixth, the IronBirds extended their lead. Austin Knight singled. Riley Hornback laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the pitcher Dyann Diaz threw the ball wildly to first. Dudley Leonora laid down a sac bunt, moving the runners to second and third. Davis knocked them in with a two-run single.

Austin Goolsby made it a five-run game in the seventh. He blasted a solo home run, the first of his career, making it 7-2.

After pitching a scoreless eighth, Aberdeen reliever Devin Jones found himself in trouble in the ninth inning. Williams led off the inning with a walk. Muren singled, putting two men on with nobody out. Henry Rodriguez tapped a ball out in front of home plate. IronBirds' catcher Goolsby threw wildly to third, allowing two runs to score and Rodriguez to get to second. Neiko Johnson singled putting runners on the corners with two men down.

Jones was pulled in favor of Angel Cespedes. He surrendered a sacrifice fly to Jacke Healeey. The next batter, John Hinson, hit an RBI-double making it a one-run game. Hinson moved up to third on a wild pitch, putting the tying run 90-feet away. Cespedes settled down, striking out Brandon Meredith and getting Zach Johnson to fly out to right, ending the ball game.

Matt Taylor (1-0) got the win after pitching three shutout innings. Quezada (0-3) was credited with the loss. Cespedes (1) recorded the final three outs for his first save of the season.

The IronBirds will have tomorrow off, before opening up a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters on Wednesday evening at Ripken Stadium. Aberdeen will have opening night starter Parker Bridwell (1-3, 4.29) on the bump. He'll go up against right-hander Kyle Wunderlich (0-2, 11.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
